With text editing exercises following the O-Level format, students will gain confidence in the knowledge that they have the tools necessary for the O-Level examination. With a strong grammar foundation, students will become more adept in all facets of English and will find they are improving in their listening, reading, speaking and writing as well.
In the beginning of the book, there is an overview of grammar to help students understand why there is a need to study grammar and how to study it. The main grammar components are covered in the fi rst fi fteen units. Each of these units begins with a chapter opener that introduces grammar items within a meaningful context to provide exposure to the use of grammar. Grammatical rules and structures are further defi ned and elaborated on, and examples are provided to illustrate the grammar usage. The use of typographical emphasis such as bold, italic and underlining to indicate grammar metalanguage in the explanations and the corresponding grammar items in the examples will help students to understand easily how grammar is put into action in sentences. In most examples, blue bold is used to highlight the primary grammar items while black bold, blue italic, as well as solid and dotted underlines are all used to highlight secondary grammar items or relevant parts mentioned in the explanations.
Throughout the units, there are practice exercises to provide students with ample opportunities to revise and consolidate their understanding of grammar. Furthermore, text editing exercises are included to familiarise students with the format used in the O-Level examination (Section A, Paper 1).
This book serves as a complete grammar resource for students, with the aim of building their grammar skills. A strong foundation in grammar and its usage will enable students to use the language accurately, fluently and appropriately for different purposes, audiences and contexts. With a strong knowledge of grammar, students will develop the confi dence to apply their skills to the other areas of language learning, namely listening, reading, speaking and writing, and hence become effective and confident users of the English language.
